When performing arts teacher, Lynden Nicholls, of Ballarat, Victoria, wanted her library armchairs reupholstered, she knew just who to go to: She approached her multi-talented theatre friend, Darren Carmichael. Armed with a selection of her favourite linen tea-towells, she asked Darren to set to work bringing their shared vision to life. Being a collector himself, Darren contributed some of his own preferred tea-towells as well, and the success of their team effort is evident in the resulting chairs.

For many years Darren was a performer travelling with 'Strange Fruit,' a Melbourne based company known for their fusion of theatre, dance and circus. He and his partner chose the historic village of Clunes, Victoria, as their home base seven years ago, and Darren went on to develop a business of his own, making scarves out of old blankets to ward off the chilly Clunes winters. He branded his creations the work of 'The Clunes Strangler,' and extended his range to make lap-top sleeves, mobile phone cosies and all sorts of interesting things out of pre-loved fabrics.

Darren's hoping to head more and more towards furniture design and upholstery in the future. If this is any indication of the calibre of his work... All we at Polly Provincial can say is WOW - We seriously love it. Such an eye for arranging nostalgia in a compelling, tangible and ultimately practical way!
